摘要:In the early days of Lie theory--of semismple Lie algebras and groups in characteristic 0—there were no 1-cohomology groups with nontrivial irreducible coefficients. That is, though they could be defined, they were all zero. In more modern times, focusing on algebraic groups in characteristic p>0 and finite groups of Lie type, 1-cohomology groups with irreducible coefficients are both highly nontrivial and highly important, playing a key role in the study of maximal subgroups of finite groups in general. I will discuss some recent successes in this theory and further developments in higher cohomology. In addition I will discuss some recent speculations, partly confirmed, heavily involving quantum groups, and with vertex operator algebras possibly playing a role.
