Abstract: In this survey talk I will try to tell the story of the so-called Gelfand-Zeitlin modules over the Lie algebra gl(n) which, even now, form the largest known family of simple gl(n)-modules. Gelfand-Zeitlin modules were defined by Drozd, Futorny Ovsienko about 30 years ago. I will pay a special attention to recent results by Early, myself Vishnyakova which led to a connection of the theory of Gelfand-Zetlin modules with that of Khovanov-Lauda-Rouquier algebras. Eventually, this resulted in the (very recent) classification of simple Gelfand-Zeitlin modules by Kamnitzer, Tingley, Webster, Weekes Yacobi.
